How to Establish a Hierarchy Category in SAP FSCM

This tutorial explains how to establish a hierarchy category in SAP Financial Supply Chain Management (FSCM). Hierarchy categories are used to classify business partner group hierarchies according to their intended business use.

SAP FSCM Hierarchy Category Configuration Details

• Transaction code: SPRO
• SAP IMG path: Financial Supply Chain Management > Treasury and Risk Management > Basic Functions > SAP Business Partner for Financial Services > General Settings > Business Partner Group Hierarchy > Establish Hierarchy Category.

Before creating a category, determine the business purpose of the hierarchy and choose a clear category key. The key should follow your organization’s SAP naming conventions because it identifies the category in subsequent business partner hierarchy configuration.

Steps to Define a Hierarchy Category in SAP FSCM

Step 1: Enter transaction code SPRO in the SAP command field and press Enter.

Step 2: Select the SAP Reference IMG option to open the Implementation Guide.

Step 3: On the Display IMG screen, navigate through the following menu path:

• Financial Supply Chain Management
• Treasury and Risk Management
• Basic Functions
• SAP Business Partner for Financial Services
• General Settings
• Business Partner Group Hierarchy
• Establish Hierarchy Category

Choose the IMG activity Establish Hierarchy Category to open the hierarchy category maintenance screen.

Step 4: On the Change View: Maintenance View for Hierarchy Categories overview screen, review the existing hierarchy categories. Choose New Entries to create a category.

Step 5: On the New Entries screen, enter the required hierarchy category information.

• Hierarchy Category: Enter the key that uniquely identifies the hierarchy category in SAP FSCM.
• Usage: Specify the intended usage or business purpose of the hierarchy category.

Step 6: Check the entered values and choose the Save icon. If SAP displays a transport request prompt, assign the configuration to the appropriate customizing request according to your system landscape and transport procedure.

How the Hierarchy Category Fields Are Used

The hierarchy category key distinguishes one type of business partner group hierarchy from another. The usage value describes the category’s purpose and helps users select the correct category when maintaining hierarchy-related settings.

Use a category key that is meaningful within your organization’s configuration standards. Avoid creating duplicate categories for the same business purpose, and review existing entries before adding a new one.

Checks After Saving the SAP FSCM Hierarchy Category

• Confirm that the new hierarchy category appears in the overview list.
• Verify that the category key and usage were entered correctly.
• Check that the configuration was recorded in the intended transport request.
• Confirm that the category is available when maintaining the related business partner group hierarchy settings.
• Do not change or delete a category that is already used without first checking its dependent configuration and business data.

Common Issues When Establishing a Hierarchy Category

• New Entries is unavailable: Verify that the client is open for customizing and that your user has the required authorization.
• Duplicate key error: The hierarchy category key already exists. Review the existing entries and use a unique key where a separate category is required.
• Changes cannot be saved: Check whether a valid customizing transport request is available and confirm that the required fields are complete.
• Category is not available later: Confirm that the entry was saved successfully and that you are working in the correct client and system.

The hierarchy category is now defined in SAP FSCM and can be used in the relevant business partner group hierarchy configuration.
