Create multiple stock groups in Tally ERP 9

Multiple stock group creation in Tally ERP 9 lets you add several related inventory groups from one screen. This is useful when the groups share the same parent group, such as creating separate television brand groups under a common Television group.

Before continuing, create the required parent group. You can refer to the procedure for creating a single stock group in Tally. To open the multiple creation screen, follow this path:

Gateway of Tally > Inventory Info. > Stock Groups > Multiple Stock Groups > Create

Step 1: Open Inventory Info from Gateway of Tally

From the Gateway of Tally screen, select Inventory Info. This menu contains the options used to maintain stock groups, stock items, units of measure and other inventory masters.

Choose Stock Groups from the Inventory Information menu. A stock group is used to classify stock items with similar characteristics for reporting and inventory management.

Step 3: Choose Create under Multiple Stock Groups

The Stock Groups menu displays options for maintaining groups individually or in bulk:

  1. Single Stock Group—creates or maintains one stock group at a time.
  2. Multiple Stock Groups—creates or maintains several stock groups in one entry screen.

Select Create under Multiple Stock Groups.

Step 4: Select the parent group for the new stock groups

In the Multi Stock Group Creation screen, select the parent group in the Under Group field. In this example, Television is selected as the parent group. Double-click the group name or select it from the List of Groups.

When a parent group is selected at the top of the screen, Tally applies it to the new groups entered below. The Under value can still be reviewed for each row before saving.

Step 5: Enter the stock group names and quantity setting

Enter each new stock group on a separate row. For this example, the following television brand groups are created under the Television group:

Name of Stock GroupUnderShould Quantities of Items be Added?
Sony TVTelevisionYes
Samsung TVTelevisionYes
Xiaomi TVTelevisionYes
Philips TVTelevisionYes

The Should Quantities of Items be Added? option controls whether Tally combines the quantities of stock items belonging to the group when displaying group-level reports. Select Yes when the items use compatible units and their quantities can be meaningfully totalled. Select No when adding the quantities would produce a misleading total.

Step 6: Accept and save the multiple stock groups

Review the group names, parent group and quantity settings. Choose A: Accept or press Ctrl+A to save the configured details in Tally.

Choosing the correct parent group in Tally

The parent group determines where the new groups appear in the inventory hierarchy and how their values are consolidated in reports. For example, Sony TV, Samsung TV, Xiaomi TV and Philips TV can be placed under Television because they represent subdivisions of the same product category.

Avoid placing unrelated categories under one parent merely to complete bulk creation. Create separate batches when the groups belong under different parent groups.

Multiple stock group creation checks before saving

  • Confirm that the required parent stock group already exists.
  • Check each stock group name for spelling errors and duplicate entries.
  • Verify that every new group is assigned to the intended parent group.
  • Set quantity addition to Yes only when the quantities can be combined meaningfully.
  • Press Ctrl+A only after reviewing all rows in the multi-creation screen.

Common issues while creating multiple stock groups

The required parent group is not listed

Create the parent stock group first and then reopen the Multiple Stock Group Creation screen. A new group cannot be assigned under a parent that has not yet been created.

A stock group name already exists

Use a distinct name or review the existing stock group before creating another one. Clear and consistent names make stock item allocation and inventory reports easier to understand.

Quantities should not be combined in reports

Set Should Quantities of Items be Added? to No when the group contains items measured in incompatible units or when a combined quantity would not be useful.

Multiple stock groups in Tally: frequently asked questions

What is the difference between single and multiple stock group creation?

Single creation maintains one stock group at a time. Multiple creation provides a table in which several stock groups can be entered and saved together.

Can multiple stock groups have different parent groups?

The multi-creation screen is most convenient when the new groups share one parent. Review the Under field for each row, and use separate batches when groups belong to different inventory categories.

What does “Should Quantities of Items be Added?” mean?

It determines whether the quantities of stock items within the group are totalled in group-level inventory reports. Use Yes only when the quantities and units can be combined meaningfully.

How do I save the Multi Stock Group Creation screen?

Choose A: Accept or press Ctrl+A after checking all entered stock group details.
