How to Create a Single Stock Group in Tally ERP 9
A single stock group in Tally ERP 9 is created when you need to add one inventory classification and configure its details individually. Stock groups classify products that share common characteristics, such as product type, brand or department.
To create a single stock group in Tally ERP 9, use the following navigation path:
Gateway of Tally > Inventory Info. > Stock Groups > Single Stock Group > Create
Details Required for a Single Stock Group
Before opening the Stock Group Creation screen, decide how the group should fit into the inventory hierarchy. The main fields used in this tutorial are:
| Field | Purpose | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Name | Identifies the stock group in inventory reports and selection lists. | Television |
| Under | Specifies the parent stock group. | Primary |
| Should quantities of items be added? | Controls whether quantities of stock items within the group can be totalled together. | Yes |
Use Primary when the new group is a top-level inventory group. Select an existing stock group instead when the new group should be maintained as a subgroup.
Step 1: Open Inventory Info from Gateway of Tally
From the Gateway of Tally screen, choose Inventory Info. under the Masters section.

Step 2: Select Stock Groups in Inventory Info
On the Inventory Information screen, choose Stock Groups. This menu contains the options used to create, display and alter single or multiple stock groups.

Step 3: Choose Create under Single Stock Group
Under Single Stock Group, select Create. Use this option when you want to enter and review the settings for one stock group at a time.

Step 4: Enter the Single Stock Group Details
In the Single Stock Group Creation screen, enter the required details.
- Name: Enter the name of the stock group. In this example, the new group is named Television.
- Under: Select Primary because Television is being created as a main stock group. To create a subgroup, select the appropriate parent stock group instead.
- Should quantities of items be added? Select Yes when the stock items placed in this group use compatible units and their quantities should be totalled in reports.

Step 5: Accept and Save the Stock Group
After entering the stock group details, choose A: Accept or press the applicable accept key shown in Tally. Confirm the screen when prompted.
The stock group Television is now available for use. You can create stock items directly under this group or create additional subgroups beneath it.
How to Choose the Correct Parent Stock Group
The value selected in the Under field determines where the new group appears in the inventory hierarchy.
| Required structure | Value to select under “Under” |
|---|---|
| Television as a main inventory group | Primary |
| LED Television as a subgroup of Television | Television |
| Sony as a subgroup of Television | Television |
| Accessories as a subgroup of Electronics | Electronics |
Choose the parent based on how you want stock summaries to be grouped. For example, items placed under LED Television can be included within the broader Television group in inventory reports.
When to Set “Should Quantities of Items Be Added?” to Yes
Select Yes when the quantities of stock items under the group can be meaningfully added. This is generally suitable when the items use the same unit of measure, such as numbers, pieces or kilograms.
Consider selecting No when a group contains items measured in unrelated units. For example, combining products measured in pieces, litres and kilograms into one quantity total would not provide a meaningful result.
How to Verify the Newly Created Stock Group
After saving the group, return to the Stock Groups menu and use the Display option under Single Stock Group. Select the newly created group and confirm the following details:
- The stock group name is spelled correctly.
- The correct parent group appears in the Under field.
- The quantity aggregation option matches the units used by the intended stock items.
- The group appears at the expected level in the inventory hierarchy.
Common Problems While Creating a Single Stock Group
| Problem | What to check |
|---|---|
| The group appears in the wrong place | Alter the group and select the correct parent in the Under field. |
| Group-wise quantity is not useful | Check whether the included stock items use different units of measure. |
| A duplicate group was created | Review existing groups for spelling, spacing and abbreviation variations before creating another group. |
| The product cannot be selected in a voucher | Confirm that the product was created as a stock item. A stock group is only a classification. |
| The Create option is unavailable | Check the company configuration, inventory settings and user permissions. |

Single Stock Group Creation FAQs
Can a single stock group be created under another stock group?
Yes. In the Under field, select the existing stock group that should act as the parent. The new group will then be created as a subgroup.
Should a product name be created as a stock group or stock item?
Create the actual product as a stock item. Use a stock group to classify related products. For example, Television can be a group, while a specific television model should be a stock item.
Can the parent of a stock group be changed later?
Yes. Open the group through the Alter option and change the value in the Under field. Review inventory reports afterward to confirm that the revised hierarchy is correct.
What happens when quantities are not added for a stock group?
Tally will not present a combined quantity total for the items in that group. The individual item quantities and inventory values can still be maintained and reviewed.
