Assign Shipping Point to Plant in SAP SD Using OVXC
To assign a shipping point to a plant in SAP SD, use transaction code OVXC or follow the SPRO path for Logistics Execution assignment. This configuration tells SAP which shipping points are valid for a delivering plant during outbound delivery and shipping processing.
A plant can be assigned to one or more shipping points depending on how goods are dispatched from that location. A shipping point can also be used by more than one plant when the same dispatch location or shipping team handles deliveries for multiple plants. The assignment should match the real warehouse, loading, and dispatch process used by the business.
Before this step, the shipping point and the plant must already be defined. In previous training, we have learned how to assign sales organization, distribution channel and plant in SAP. That assignment controls the sales area relationship, while the shipping point to plant assignment controls which shipping points can be used for that plant in SAP shipping configuration.
What the Plant and Shipping Point Assignment Controls in SAP
The shipping point to plant assignment is part of Enterprise Structure assignment in SAP Customizing. It does not create the shipping point, and it does not by itself determine the shipping point in a sales order. Instead, it makes a shipping point available for a plant so that further SD shipping determination and delivery processing can use it.
| Configuration area | Purpose in SAP SD |
|---|---|
| Define shipping point | Creates the shipping point master configuration used for shipping activities. |
| Assign shipping point to plant | Allows a plant to use one or more shipping points for outbound delivery processing. |
| Shipping point determination | Determines the proposed shipping point based on delivering plant, shipping condition, and loading group. |
| Transport request | Saves and moves the Customizing change to the required SAP system landscape. |
Prerequisites Before Assigning Shipping Point to Plant in SAP

- The shipping point must be defined before it can be assigned to a plant.
- The business must decide whether the plant uses a single shipping point or multiple shipping points.
- You need authorization for SAP Customizing and access to a valid customizing request.
- If automatic shipping point proposal is required in sales documents, shipping point determination must also be maintained separately.

Multiple Shipping Points for One Plant in SAP SD
In many SAP SD implementations, one plant may dispatch goods through different shipping points. For example, a plant may have separate shipping points for local dispatch, export dispatch, refrigerated goods, or a different loading area. In such cases, each valid shipping point must be assigned to the plant.
The assignment in OVXC only makes those shipping points available for the plant. The automatic selection of the correct shipping point is handled by shipping point determination configuration, where SAP uses factors such as delivering plant, shipping condition, and loading group.
Using One Shipping Point for Several Plants in SAP
A shipping point can be assigned to more than one plant when the business process supports it. This is common when multiple plants share the same physical dispatch location or when a central shipping team processes deliveries for several plants.
Before using the same shipping point for several plants, confirm that picking, loading, goods issue, route scheduling, and responsibility rules are clear. Otherwise, delivery users may see a shipping point that is technically valid but not suitable for the actual dispatch process.
Shipping Point Assignment vs Shipping Point Determination in SAP
Shipping point assignment and shipping point determination are related, but they are not the same configuration. The assignment answers the question: Which shipping points are allowed for this plant? Shipping point determination answers the question: Which shipping point should SAP propose for this sales order or delivery?
| Topic | What it means | Typical issue if missing |
|---|---|---|
| Assign shipping point to plant | Maintains a valid relationship between plant and shipping point. | The shipping point may not be available for the plant. |
| Shipping point determination | Controls how SAP proposes the shipping point during sales and delivery processing. | Shipping point is blank or incorrect in the sales document. |
| Material loading group | Part of the determination logic for selecting the shipping point. | Shipping point proposal may fail for a material. |
| Customer shipping condition | Represents delivery priority or shipping behavior for the customer/order. | Different customer orders may propose unexpected shipping points. |
Troubleshooting Shipping Point to Plant Assignment Issues
If the shipping point is not proposed or cannot be used after maintaining OVXC, check the following points before changing the assignment again.
- Confirm that the shipping point is defined and not just typed manually during assignment.
- Check whether the correct plant was selected in the Shipping Point — Plants overview screen.
- Verify that the assignment was saved in a customizing request.
- Check whether shipping point determination is maintained for the combination of delivering plant, shipping condition, and loading group.
- Review the material master loading group and the customer or sales document shipping condition.
- Confirm that the sales organization, distribution channel, and plant assignment exists for the sales process.
Common Mistakes When Assigning Shipping Point to Plant in SAP
- Assigning a shipping point to the wrong plant because the plant code was not searched before editing.
- Assuming OVXC alone will automatically determine the shipping point in a sales order.
- Forgetting to save the change in the correct customizing request.
- Maintaining only one shipping point when the plant actually has multiple dispatch locations.
- Using one shared shipping point for several plants without confirming the physical shipping process.
